Niʻihau is located about 18 miles (29 km) west of Kauaʻi, and the tiny, uninhabited island of Lehua lies 0.7 miles (0.61 nmi; 1.1 km) north of Niʻihau. Niʻihau's dimensions are 6.2 miles by 18.6 miles (10 km × 30 km).

The first attempt to re-establish service was the vehicle ferries in 1959-1960s between Oahu, Maui and Big Island—aboard which surfer Eddie Aikau moved with his family from Maui to Oahu. A second invasion of Kauai from Oahu was planned but this too was canceled after an epidemic broke out among Kamehameha's forces. In 1810, a diplomatic agreement was reached whereby Kaumualiʻi agreed to be Kamehameha's vassal [13]: 47-50 and to cede Kauai to the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi upon his death by making Kamehameha's son his heir.
At one time, Hawaii had a network of railroads on each of the larger islands that helped move farm commodities as well as passengers. These railroads were all 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge for the majority although there were some 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) gauge on some of the smaller islands – standard US gauge is 4 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (1,435 mm)).
