The Buick V6 is an OHV V6 engine developed by the Buick division of General Motors and first introduced in 1962. The engine was originally 198 cu in (3.2 L) and was marketed as the Fireball engine. GM continued to develop and refine the 231 cu in (3.8 L) V6, eventually and commonly referred to simply as the 3800, through numerous iterations.
The first of the family, the 3.3 liter engine's actual piston displacement is 3.3 L; 201.4 cu in (3,301 cc) with a 93 mm × 81 mm (3.66 in × 3.19 in) bore and stroke. In 1994, the 3.3 received a 12 hp (9 kW) increase in power to 162 hp (121 kW) due to a new air intake .

Since there is no room in the V between the cylinder banks for an intake system, all the intakes are on one side of the engine, and all the exhausts are on the other side. It uses a firing order of 1-5-3-6-2-4 (which is the firing order used by most straight-six engines), rather than the common V6 firing order of 1-2-3-4-5-6 or 1-6-5-4-3-2.
The Buick straight-8 engine (Fireball 8) was a straight-eight cylinder automobile engine produced from 1931 to 1953 by the Buick division of General Motors. It replaced the Buick Straight-6 engine across the board in all models on its debut.
This engine replaced the 250 cu in (4.1 L) straight-six in full-size Chevrolets and Camaros as the base six-cylinder engine. Additionally, the intermediate Chevrolet Malibu and Monte Carlo also used the 229 cu in (3.8 L) as a replacement for both the 200 cu in (3.3 L) V6 and the 231 cu in (3.8 L) Buick V6.
Both had a bore of 3.875 in (98.4 mm), but the stroke decreased slightly from 3.4375 in (87.31 mm) on the earlier engine to 3.414 in (86.7 mm) on 1996 and later engines. The small stroke change of 0.03 in (0.76 mm) was accomplished by moving the piston pin and changing the crankshaft stroke; the rod length did not change.
The engine was an odd-fire V6, meaning that TDC for the cylinders was not evenly spaced around the engine but grouped in pairs. The engines in Jeeps featured a heavier flywheel than the Buick version to help dampen vibrations resulting from the engine's firing pattern. The engine was known at the time for its power and reliability.
