In October 2009, Tralee Golf Club celebrated its 25th anniversary since its move from the town of Tralee to its present location on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean at West Barrow, Ardfert, County Kerry. The course was designed by Arnold Palmer. [1] [2] The course is a par 72 and measures almost 7,000 yards from the championship tees.
Golf began in the town many years before 1913 on rough ground near the Ramelton Road. Golfing facilities later moved to a 47-acre (190,000 m 2) 9-hole course at Crievesmith, in Oldtown, in 1913 where the club was formed. Crievesmith was sold in 1965 for £3000 and the club moved to Barnhill and remain there to this day.
The club was founded in 1894 and started off as 9 holes at the existing location of the Old Course. This was upgraded to 18 holes in 1934. In 1920 the club built another clubhouse at Strand Head and Willie Park Jr. designed 18 holes and this is now currently the Strand Course.
