In October 2009, Tralee Golf Club celebrated its 25th anniversary since its move from the town of Tralee to its present location on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean at West Barrow, Ardfert, County Kerry. The course was designed by Arnold Palmer. [1] [2] The course is a par 72 and measures almost 7,000 yards from the championship tees.

In May 2011, the state visit by Elizabeth II to the Republic of Ireland, the first royal visit since that of George V in 1911, was seen as popular and marked a new relationship between Britain and Ireland. In 2013, the club voted to restore the 'royal' prefix, and its name reverted to the Royal Curragh Golf Club.

The Palmer North Course was the venue for the Ryder Cup in 2006, the first time the event had been staged in Ireland. The course also hosted the Smurfit European Open on the European Tour from 1995 to 2003 and again in 2005 , with that tournament being played on the resort's "inland links " Palmer South Course in 2004 , 2006 , and 2007 .
