There are 85 miles (137 km) of hiking trails, ranging from shorter routes such as the 2.6 miles (4.2 km) Sugar Run Trail, to the 21 miles (34 km) Ridge Trail, which spans the park and reaches an elevation of 3,513 feet (1,071 m). The Four State Challenge requires a hike of approximately 45 miles (72 km), most of which are in Maryland. The state contains the Ensign Cowell shelter, and the Rocky Run Shelters near Boonsboro. The older log structure was built by the CCC in 1940. Another stop is the Dahlgren Campground. Hikers can stop here for the night and have free showers.
Bad Branch Falls State Nature Preserve has an uneven terrain resulting in about 7 miles of strenuous hiking trails and foot bridges throughout the nature preserve. The moderate 1.8 mile loop leading Bad Branch Gorge where the 60-foot waterfall flows over the sandstone cliffs, starts from a small parking lot that can hold up to 10 cars and one bus.
The route then becomes concurrent with KY 53 (Mount Eden Road) as it turns toward the southeast. Roughly 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from Southville, KY 44 enters Mount Eden and travels along the Shelby-Spencer County line for a short distance. KY 44 finally crosses back over into Spencer County 2.7 miles (4.3 km) southeast of Mount Eden.
