John Lavery was born in inner North Belfast, on 20 March 1856 and baptised at St Patrick's Church, Belfast.While still a child, he moved to Scotland where he attended Haldane Academy in Glasgow in the 1870s. [1]

Born in Belfast, Lavery signed for Bradford City in June 1948, leaving the club in September 1948 to play for Halifax Town. [1] He began his career with Glentoran and Dundalk. [2] He played for Northern Ireland Schools and the League of Ireland XI. [3] During his time with Bradford City he made five appearances in the Football League. [4] [5]
