The town of Newburgh has remained a part of Orange County ever since. [10] The village of Newburgh was incorporated in 1800. [11] Then as now, villages in New York State remained a part of their parent towns. [12] However, when the village was re-chartered as the city of Newburgh in 1865, [11] it became totally independent of the town. [12]
The town was formed from Town of Wayne in 1813 as the "Town of Jersey" while still part of Steuben County. The current name was adopted in 1836. [4] Orange was increased by parts of Hornby (1842) and Bradford (1854). The town was made part of the new Schuyler County in 1854.
