Orochimaru (大蛇丸), featured in the Japanese folktale Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya), is the archenemy of the ninja Jiraiya. [2] He was once named Yashagorō ( 夜叉五郎 ) and was one of Jiraiya's followers but was overtaken by serpent magic.
His backstory is explored in Naruto Gaiden: The Road Illuminated by the Full Moon, which reveals that Mitsuki is an artificial human created by Orochimaru, and a modified clone of him, gaining the name Mitsuki from the fact that he is a "vessel" (杯, tsuki) for the "snake" (巳, mi) to inhabit.
Kabuto and Orochimaru discuss Sasuke Uchiha's growth during the Chunin Exams, and recall how the Third Hokage took away Orochimaru’s ability to use jutsu. Orochimaru also tells Kabuto that he wants Sasuke's body. After practicing his ninja techniques, Sasuke makes a sudden attack on Orochimaru, having nothing else to learn from him.
But Jiraiya and Gamabunta arrive to free Naruto before Orochimaru takes the two out. Things appeared hopeless until Naruto states that he will not give in until he saves Sasuke, activating a program that Itachi secretly inserted into Mecha-Naruto. Now aiding Naruto, Mecha-Naruto turns on Orochimaru before his creator bisects him in half.
Eventually, Naruto is drawn into battle with Orochimaru, eventually consumed by Nine-Tails as he is transformed into a Four-Tailed Demon Fox manifestation of the Tailed Beast. Consumed mentally, Naruto attacks Orochimaru before Yamato uses his unique abilities to suppress Nine-Tails and returns Naruto to his normal state.
Inspired by Naruto's winning of their bet, Tsunade overcomes her restraints and joins Jiraiya in attacking Orochimaru. Unable to do combat with both of them, Orochimaru escapes with Kabuto.
