The University of Hong Kong (HKU) (Chinese: 香港大學) is a public research university in Pokfulam, Hong Kong. It was founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese by the London Missionary Society and formally established as the University of Hong Kong in 1911.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong [b] (CUHK) is a public research university in Sha Tin, New Territories, Hong Kong.. Established in 1963 as a federation of three colleges – Chung Chi College, New Asia College, and United College, [4] it is Hong Kong's second-oldest university, with the first being the University of Hong Kong.
In 2015 the head of the governing council of HKU stated that HKU-SZH is expected to repay the HK$200M advance by 2023. [7] On 14 November 2016 Professor Lo Chung-mau was scheduled to become the head of HKU-SZH, replacing Grace Tang. He is a liver transplant expert, member of the HKU university council, and the head of surgery of HKU. [3]
The university lends its name to HKU station, the main public transport access to the campus (and the Lung Fu Shan and Shek Tong Tsui neighbourhoods), opened on 28 December 2014. The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine is situated 4.5 km [ clarification needed ] southwest of the main campus, in the Southern District near Sandy Bay and Pok Fu Lam .
