The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is a public community college in Clark County, Nevada. The college has more than 2,500 teaching and non-teaching staff and is the largest public college or university in Nevada. [1] [2] It is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education.
University of Nevada, Las Vegas was the second four-year university in the state to be founded, initially as Nevada Southern University in 1957. Winning its autonomy in 1965, Nevada Southern was renamed in 1969 due to the need for better national recognition and partially for separation from the University of Nevada. [1]
In 1951, an extension campus was created in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1957, the extension became the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. [3] In 1971, the College of Southern Nevada was founded to serve the growing population of Nevada. The most recent public college is Nevada State University in Henderson, Nevada, which was founded in 2002.
At the time, the program only had two full time employees and relied heavily on part-time workers from the Strip, a practice that continued for years as the college grew. [1] In 1969, founding dean Jerry Vallen established the newly-renamed College of Hotel Administration as a stand-alone program. [ 2 ]
UNLV launched its first comprehensive campaign, Invent the Future, with the goal of raising $500 million by December 2008. Also, the Air Force ROTC program was established on campus. [19] In 2006, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents raised the minimum GPA to 3.0 for admittance to UNLV.
