Gore Bay became a town on 7 April 1890, on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada. Located on Gore Bay, a bay of Lake Huron's North Channel, it is one of the two incorporated towns of Manitoulin District, of which it is the administrative and government seat. After the Treaty of 1862, Manitoulin Island was open for white settlement.

Secondary Highway 540, commonly referred to as Highway 540, is the primary east–west secondary highway on Manitoulin Island in the Canadian province of Ontario. At 132 km (82 mi), it is the longest highway on the island. It travels from the hamlet of Meldrum Bay, near the western end of the island, to Highway 6 in the community of Little Current.
Meldrum Bay is located at the western terminus of Highway 540, 72 kilometers west of Gore Bay, in Dawson township. Settled in the 1870s, and named after a town in Scotland, Meldrum Bay developed as a commercial fishing and lumbering centre. Once the village was home to a busy fishing fleet, and Great Lakes steamers tied up at the docks.
