In December 2013, it was announced that LSUA decided to rebrand the school which started in January 2014. Among the changes, the school was no longer recognized as Louisiana State University at Alexandria and was changed to LSU of Alexandria. Other changes included a new logo and school colors similar to the LSU flagship campus itself.

Its name changed again in 1949, to Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University. A year later, it became an autonomous four-year institution as Northeast Louisiana State College. In 1969, it granted doctoral degrees for the first time and was elevated to university status as Northeast Louisiana University (NLU).

The 1968 Northeast Louisiana State Indians football team was an American football team that represented Northeast Louisiana State College (now known as the University of Louisiana at Monroe) in the Gulf States Conference during the 1968 NCAA College Division football season.
