The Rome–Naples high-speed railway line is one of the railways in the Italian high-speed rail network. Initially opened in December 2005, it is the first railway line in Italy to be electrified at 25 kV AC (instead of traditional 3 kV DC ) and the first in the world to use ETCS Level 2 in normal rail operations.
High-speed service was introduced on the Rome-Milan line in 1988–89 with the ETR 450 Pendolino train, with a top speed of 250 km/h (160 mph) and cutting travel times from about 5 hours to 4. [7] The prototype train ETR X 500 was the first Italian train to reach 300 km/h (190 mph) on the Direttissima on 25 May 1989. [7]
The line allows the reduction of congestion of rail traffic on the Naples–Salerno coast line, as trains can travel on the new line. The new line starts at Roma Est junction, which allows trains from the Rome–Naples high-speed line to continue south on a branch to Casoria junction where there is a link with the main rail node of Naples.
Current limitations on the tracks set the maximum operating speed of both types of trains to 300 km/h (190 mph). The Naples–Salerno railway line is a major railway line in the Italian rail network, forming a link in the main trunk line to southern Italy. The first nine kilometres from Naples to Portici was the first railway in Italy, opened on 3 October 1839. It was extended to Torre Annunziata Centrale on 2 August 1842, Nocera Inferiore on 19 May 1844. [3]

In December 2021, Trenitalia France launched the Milan–Paris Frecciarossa , an open-access service between Paris and Milan, using Frecciarossa 1000 trains.
