The Accra Technical University (ATU) was established in 1949 as a Technical School in Ghana and commissioned in 1957 as Accra Technical Institute before being converted into a Polytechnic in 2007 by the Parliament of Ghana. A second campus has been opened in nearby Abeka, a nearby Accra suburb and a satellite campus at Nungua. Apart from Accra there are satellite campuses in Kumasi, Takoradi, Koforidua and Ho. The 9-member University Council comprising distinguished educators, business executives and government officials was inaugurated on August 23, 2010.
The School was founded on 9 August 1909 in Accra [5] [6] as Accra Technical School and later changed to Government Technical School. It moved to its current site in Takoradi in 1939. [ 7 ] In 1953, the name was changed to Government Secondary Technical School , and in 1970, it was given its current name. [ 8 ]
