North Granby is a village [1] and census-designated place (CDP) in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. It is part of the town of Granby. The population was 1,944 at the 2010 census. [2] The center of North Granby is today marked principally by the Cossitt Branch Library and the Allen Cider Mill.
The area that is now West Granby village was first settled in the early 18th century, and was largely agrarian, with a sawmill established on the West Branch Salmon Brook about 1742. In 1784, the water power of the brook was harnessed for a gristmill, carding mill, trip hammer facility, and gin distillery.
It is part of Connecticut's Capitol Planning Region and the population was 10,124 as of the 2020 census. [2] It is bordered by Granby on the north, Simsbury on the east, Avon and Burlington on the south, New Hartford on the west, and Barkhamsted on the northwest. Running through it is the Farmington River.
This area includes the township Simsbury as well as Granby and Canton, which would later separate from Simsbury in 1786 [16] and 1806, [5] respectively. The precise origin of the name of the town is not known for certain. The town records covering the first ten years after incorporation were accidentally burned in 1680 and 1681.
