There has been an influx of resort-type developments with small, man-made private lakes and deeded private docks access to Castle Rock Lake in the last few years.

The district also contains Volk Field Air National Guard Base, Buckhorn State Park, Roche-a-Cri State Park, most of Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, and the eastern half of Mill Bluff State Park. [2]
