The Wallowa Mountains (/ w ə ˈ l aʊ w ə /) are a mountain range located in the Columbia Plateau of northeastern Oregon in the United States.The range runs approximately 40 miles (64 km) northwest to southeast in southwestern Wallowa County and eastern Union County between the Blue Mountains to the west and the Snake River to the east.
The park features camping, trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, athletic fields, and picnicking facilities [3] as well as the Puffer Butte and Wohelo retreat centers. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] In the late 1950s and early 1960s, a rope tow for alpine skiing was operated at the park by a private ski club.
The town of Wallowa Lake is situated next to the park. Wallowa Lake State Park has a variety of activities, including hiking wilderness trails, horseback riding, bumper boat, canoeing, miniature golf, and a tramway to the top of one of the mountains (a rise of 3,700 feet [2]). Wildlife is abundant in the area.
Grande Ronde Lake Campground has eight campsites. The Wallowa–Whitman National Forest is used for hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and other recreational activities. Anthony Lakes Ski Area is within the forest. The ski area is 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Baker City and 45 miles (72 km) southwest of La Grande.
