The most common cause of urinary retention is BPH. This disorder starts around age 50 and symptoms may appear after 10–15 years. BPH is a progressive disorder and narrows the neck of the bladder leading to urinary retention. By the age of 70, almost 10 percent of males have some degree of BPH and 33% have it by the eighth decade of life.
[2] [3] The chronic condition is diagnosed in approximately 10% of postcholecystectomy cases. The pain associated with postcholecystectomy syndrome is usually ascribed to either sphincter of Oddi dysfunction or to post-surgical adhesions. [4] A recent 2008 study shows that postcholecystectomy syndrome can be caused by biliary microlithiasis. [5]
Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a chronic condition that can lead to more serious complications like esophageal cancer. Symptoms include burping, abdominal and stomach bloating, along with pain and discomfort.

It is normally done when esophageal cancer is detected early, before it has spread to other parts of the body. Esophagectomy of early-stage cancer represents the best chance of a cure.
Large studies of patients have also failed to show any correlation between lower urinary tract symptoms and a specific diagnosis. [10] Also, recently a report of lower urinary tract symptoms even with malignant features in the prostate failed to be associated with prostate cancer after further laboratory investigation of the biopsy. [9]
Overactive bladder affects approximately 11% of the population and more than 40% of people with overactive bladder have incontinence. [5] [6] Conversely, about 40% to 70% of urinary incontinence is due to overactive bladder.
