Rainbow Foods was a supermarket chain in Minnesota. [1] Founded in 1983, it operated more than 40 stores across the state at its peak [2] and was the second-largest grocery store chain in the Twin Cities, behind Cub Foods.
In July 1988, the company started its hyperstore Big Bear Plus concept in Wintersville, Ohio (140,000 sq ft (13,000 m 2)), and Bridgeport, Ohio (100,000 sq ft (10,000 m 2)), the stores featured 40 percent food and 60 percent general merchandise. The concept was a combination of its Harts Stores (29 stores in 1991) and the Big Bear Grocery format.

Reinhart, grew the Applebaum's supermarket chain to become the second-largest grocery chain in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area by embracing Applebaum's idea to launch Rainbow Foods by converting some of the old Applebaum stores to the new brand. The chain was founded October 1, 1983.
It was located a few doors down from the grocery store. The general store initially ran at a considerable loss and became a significant financial drain on the grocery store. This situation eventually reversed and the general store became a strong support to the financial health of Rainbow Grocery. [citation needed]
