County Buildings is a municipal facility at Martin Street in Stafford, Staffordshire. The building, which is the meeting place for both Staffordshire County Council and Stafford Borough Council, is a Grade II* listed building. [1]
Designed Henry Thomas Hare in 1893, the building itself was constructed by Henry Lovatt. The steps and railings, which prominently feature the Staffordshire Knot, were remodelled relatively recently when Martin Street was pedestrianised to provide improved access for the disabled.
When the county council was first created in 1889 it met at the Shire Hall in the Market Place in Stafford, which had been completed in 1798. [30] Shortly after the council's creation it built itself a new meeting place and offices at County Buildings on Martin Street, adjoining the side of Shire Hall, with the new building opening in 1895. [31]
The building was purpose-built for the council and completed in 1978. [ 34 ] [ 35 ] Full council meetings are held at County Buildings on Martin Street.
