During the Vietnam War, it was used for detention of captured Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. The prison covered an area of 40,000 square metres (0.015 sq mi). During the Tet Offensive in early 1968, 2,665 POWs escaped after attacking the fenceline, few of them were recaptured. The Vietcong shelled or attacked the camp 34 times in 1968.

On Phu Quoc Island, ARVN soldiers and Republic of Vietnam Navy sailors fought against superior VC units near the pier in Duong Dong until Minh's surrender broadcast. The soldiers and sailors later surrendered to VC at the navy pier to avoid further bloodshed.
USCGC Minnetonka (WHEC-67) was an Owasco class high endurance cutter built for World War II service with the United States Coast Guard. The war ended before the ship was completed and consequently Minnetonka did not see wartime service until the Vietnam War. Minnetonka was built by Western Pipe & Steel at the company's San Pedro shipyard.
On 9 September one of the Regional Force companies withdrew from the island.
