Grahams Island State Park is a public recreation area in North Dakota occupying 959 acres (388 ha) on the eastern flank of Grahams Island in Devils Lake.At one time there were four recreational units on the lake, collectively known as Devils Lake State Parks, but rising water caused three units to be closed, leaving only Grahams Island State Park in operation.
The resort became well known for hosting youth and adult baseball and softball tournaments. The resort was a very popular weekend destination for generations of young people. The lake is located about fifty miles (80 km) from the state capital of Bismarck; the distance by the Missouri River is about 75 miles (120 km). The lake's width averages between 2–3 miles (3–5 km), with a maximum of 14 miles (23 km) at Van Hook Arm. Lake Sakakawea marks the maximum southwest extent of glaciation during the ice age.
The reservoir has two primary inflows: North Fork Grand River and South Fork Grand River. The single Grand River serves as the only outflow. Species of fish in the lake include walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, yellow perch, northern pike, and common carp. [1] Shadehill Reservoir is the location of the Shadehill Recreation Area.
The park was established in 1964 to preserve evidence of North Dakota's Icelandic heritage after G. B. Gunlogson (1887-1983) donated 200 acres (81 ha) of his family's lands to the state in 1963. The land had been in the Gunlogson family for over 80 years when it was donated to North Dakota. [5]
