Heidelberg University, officially the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg (German: Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg; Latin: Universitas Ruperto Carola Heidelbergensis), is a public research university in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The Heidelberg University Library has a collection with 6,900 manuscripts, 1,800 incunabula, 110,600 autographs and a collection of old maps, graphic sheets, drawings and photographs. The origins of the Bibliotheca Palatina [ 5 ] with manuscripts from the 9th to the 17th century go back to the founding year of the university in 1386.
On October 19, 1386, the first lecture was held, making Heidelberg the oldest university in Germany. In November 1386, Marsilius of Inghen was elected first rector of the university. As a motto for the seal, he chose semper apertus —i.e., "the book of learning is always open." [3]
