The town is crossed by U.S. routes 202 and 302, and state routes 4, 35 and 115. It borders the towns of Standish and Gorham to the west, Westbrook to the south, Falmouth and Cumberland to the east, Gray to the northeast and Raymond to the north.
The town of Standish was settled in the 1760s and incorporated in 1785, named in honor of Myles Standish.Its first meeting house was built in the Standish Corner area, then a crossroads on the main route between Portland and Fryeburg, and is thus where the town's early civic activities were focused.

The town was platted by John D. Standish in 1871, who owned all of the land in the vicinity. Before the plat was formally recorded, Standish sold off some of his land in the area. The town was initially named "Granton". John Standish owned the town's first business, a sawmill, he later had the town name changed back to Standish.
