Sinjar (Arabic: سنجار, romanized: Sinjār; [2] Kurdish: شنگال, romanized: Şingal, Syriac: ܫܝܓܪ, romanized: Shingar [3]) is a town in the Sinjar District of the Nineveh Governorate in northern Iraq. It is located about five kilometers south of the Sinjar Mountains.
Sinjar District was created in 1934 by Royal decree. [4] After the 1935 Yazidi revolt, the district was placed under military control. [5] [6]The al-Shamal district, originally formed in 1936, was abolished in 1987, and its area was added to Sinjar.
Hebrew שנער Šinʿār is equivalent to the Egyptian Sngr and Hittite Šanḫar(a), all referring to southern Mesopotamia.Some Assyriologists considered Šinʿār a western variant or cognate of Šumer (), with their original being the Sumerians' own name for their country, ki-en-gi(-r), but this is "beset with philological difficulties".
