Barrs Chapel C.M.E. Church is a historic district at 5560 Briarpatch Lake Road in the Midway community of Henry County, Tennessee. Contributing properties in the historic district include the Barrs Chapel Church building, constructed in 1953; Barrs Chapel School, built in 1906; and Barrs Chapel Church Cemetery, which dates to around 1870. The Digby Chantry Chapel (the Chapel of St John the Evangelist) was built in 1859, [10] and St Joseph's Chapel was built in 1893 by Viscountess Southwell to mark the coming of age of her son, who had been educated at the monks' school in Ramsgate (St Augustine's College). [11] The central tower of the church, with its spire, was never completed.
The d'Este Mausoleum, St. Laurence Churchyard, Ramsgate. The funeral took place on the afternoon of Monday 28 May 1866 at St Laurence Church, Ramsgate. [2] She is interred in the family mausoleum (Grade II listed). [3] She left an estate valued at around £70,000, of which over £40,000 was left to charity. [4]
It was built for Elijah Simerly (1820–1891), the founder of the town of Hampton (named after his wife's maiden name) and the President of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad from 1867 to 1871. [3] The house was acquired by A. H. Robinson in 1907. [3]
On 27 August 1902, the East Kent Times and District Advertiser said about the new church: The Church is in the early decorated style of Gothic architecture, and in dimensions is 80 feet long and 30 feet wide. There is a fine Gothic altar, with columns of Labrador granite, polished at Aberdeen.
