An outline of knowledge is an outline whose scope is everything known by humankind. Outlines of knowledge are typically large, though some are more in-depth than others. These outline articles form the outline of the knowledge on Wikipedia. Outlines show the structure of a subject, helping the reader become familiar with the subject it presents and providing a table of contents, or site map, to that subject. Outlines also help guide readers to related articles and ones that they never thought we'd have.
An outline is also like a table of contents or a menu, except that, instead of listing chapter titles in a book or food dishes in a restaurant, outlines present the topics in a subject. Another useful metaphor is that each page in Wikipedia is a teleportation chamber. To use the search box for teleporting, you specify your destination subject.

For each topic outline, a search for articles on its subject should be conducted periodically, and links to topics added to the outline. If there are too many of a particular type of link, for example, the cities in a particular country, a link should be provided to a list of them rather than listing them all in the outline itself.
