The Kern River Valley has a thriving tourism and outdoor recreation industry centered around its lake, rivers, and mountains. Camping, hunting and fishing are popular activities, as are white water rafting , boating, and other water sports.
There are four rock and cement lined soaking pools at the site. The small Miners Tub is located 50 feet above the larger three pools which are located at the river's edge. [1] The hot springs are maintained by volunteers, the Kern River Hot Springs Angels. [2] The Angels periodically power wash the hot springs soaking tubs in the area. [3]
Kern River County Park is a large recreation facility located just north of Bakersfield, California. The facility is 1,012 acres (4.10 km 2 ), and includes a park, zoo, golf course, and other amenities. [ 1 ]
The area of the soaking pools has been prone to illegal camping, vandalism and trash; a volunteer group, the Hot Springs Angels, cleaned it and educated visitors under an agreement with the Forest Service. [5] The water is high in uranium and radon. [4] After a death in October 2022, the Forest Service destroyed the pools as a public danger. [5]
During the late 1940s and early 1950s, additional land was purchased east of Hart Park. This would quadruple the size from 370 to 1,012 acres (150 to 410 ha) (although the new land was not then considered part of Hart Park). Called the Kern River County Park, the land would contain a motorboat lake, golf course, and campgrounds.
The city is served by the Kern Valley Airport, three miles (4.8 km) south of town. The airport features a fly-in campground on site. An airfield cafe serves both pilots and visitors. [14] The city is also served by Kern Transit, connecting the Kern River Valley with the rest of the county.
The Kern River Parkway Trail is a system of hiking and biking trails that extends along the Kern River from the mouth of the canyon to Hart Park in Bakersfield, California. The trail system is part of the larger Kern River Parkway, which includes several parks, picnic areas, and green spaces along the river.
