San Mateo is an unincorporated community in Putnam County, Florida, United States, located just southeast of the city of Palatka.It is on the east shore of the St. Johns River between buoys 12 and 15; stretching from Buzzard Island to the entrance to Dunn's Creek.

The St. Johns River (Spanish: Río San Juan) is the longest river in the U.S. state of Florida and is the most significant one for commercial and recreational use. [ note 1 ] At 310 miles (500 km) long, it flows north and winds through or borders 12 counties.

The 30,843 acres (124.82 km 2) Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge is part of the United States National Wildlife Refuge System, located on the west coast of Florida, about 70 miles (110 km) north of St. Petersburg. It is famous as the southern wintering site for the re-introduced eastern population of whooping cranes.
