Lake Wawasee is the largest natural lake in Indiana, while Lake Tippecanoe is the deepest lake, reaching depths of over 120 feet (37 m). Both lakes are located in Kosciusko County. Chain O' Lakes State Park, located in Noble County, contains 11 lakes, 8 of which are connected by natural channels.
US 20 then meets SR 51 at the state road's northern terminus, near the boundary between Lake Station and Gary. Just west of Portage, the road passes under I-94. In Portage, the route has intersections with both SR 249 and SR 149. The road now enters Burns Harbor and has interchanges with I-94 and SR 49, just south of Indiana Dunes National Park.

His residence before his marriage to Laura C. Bowsher was at 329 West Colfax Avenue, now the site of the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend.
Wyboston is the location of the Black Cat roundabout, where the Bedford Road joins the A1 road. In the 1930s the location was the site of a cafe and fuel station, and was a notable stopping point for motorists. The name stuck for the road junction, and when the road system was improved in 2010 a black cat artwork was erected on the roundabout.

Gravel extraction has created a small lake and several smaller pools and marshland. The pools are surrounded by willow trees, and plants include common fleabane and marsh woundwort. Dragonflies and damselflies are common over the marsh in the summer. [2] There is access to the site by a footpath from the Wyboston Lakes complex. [2]
