Gulf Shores is located on the Gulf of Mexico, and is the southernmost settlement in the state of Alabama. [2] It is served by Alabama State Route 59 (Gulf Shores Parkway), which leads north to Foley. Route 182 (Beach Boulevard) runs east-west along the shore front, while Route 180 (Fort Morgan Road) runs parallel to it, north of Little Lagoon.
The Edgewater Gulf weathered the Great Depression and attracted many post-World War II conventions which boosted its business. It retained its grandeur through the 1960s, but closed in 1970, unable to compete with newer hotels. In 1971, the grand hotel was demolished by implosion to make way for expansion of Edgewater Mall shopping center. [4]

Gulf State Park is a public recreation area on the Gulf of Mexico in the city of Gulf Shores in southern Baldwin County, Alabama. The state park 's 6,150 acres (2,490 ha) mostly encompass the land behind the Gulf Shores beach community, between Highway 59 and SH 161 , with the west end extending further south to a wide beach area. The San Carlos Hotel, also known as Hotel San Carlos, was built in 1925 and is located at 202 N. Central Avenue. Mae West, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Marilyn Monroe and Gene Autry are among the celebrities who at one time stayed at the San Carlos. The hotel was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Reference number 83003498.
Aston Hotels and Resorts served as predecessor to Aqua-Aston Hospitality. Aston was founded in 1967, [2] as the Hotel Corporation of the Pacific (HCP) as a hotel and condominium management firm; the Hotel Corporation of the Pacific is itself traced to 1948 with the opening of the Royal Grove Hotel in Waikiki.
