José L. Hernández (born 27 August 1958) is a Mexican mariachi musician.. Hernández is the youngest of eight children (Esteban and Maria Eva Hernández, parents). He is the founder of Mariachi Sol de Mexico and also Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, [1] America's first all-female professional mariachi ensemble.
The award has been presented mostly by artists originating from Mexico on all but three occasions. In 2005 when it was awarded to Puerto Rican singer Luis Miguel , who happens to reside in Mexico, 2005 for the album México En La Piel [ 3 ] and the following two years to an American singer of Mexican origin Pepe Aguilar.
Enrique Lopetegui of the Los Angeles Times wrote: "But it's the two new Spanish ranchera songs [El Toro Relajo and Tú Sólo Tú], backed by El Monte's Mariachi Sol de Mexico, that are most impressive, as Selena effortlessly adapted to a difficult style she wasn't very familiar with, However Selena was sick during the recording, so her voice wasn't in good shape."

In 2012 he released "Un Hombre Normal", a compilation album featuring some of his biggest hits, remixes and several new recordings. The title track would eventually reach No. 1 on the Latin Charts. During this time Paz decided to release an album of all Mariachi songs with the group Mariachi Sol De Mexico.
