Neomycin/polymyxin B/bacitracin, also known as triple antibiotic ointment, is an antibiotic medication used to reduce the risk of infections following minor skin injuries. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It contains the three antibiotics neomycin , polymyxin B , and bacitracin . [ 1 ]

Topical formulations are used to combat a multitude of diseased states of the eye. These states may include bacterial infections, eye injury, glaucoma, and dry eye. [1]
Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), also known as ophthalmic zoster, is shingles involving the eye or the surrounding area. Common signs include a rash of the forehead with swelling of the eyelid . There may also be eye pain and redness, inflammation of the conjunctiva , cornea or uvea , and sensitivity to light .
Corneal ulcers in cats can be caused by trauma, detergent burns, infections, and other eye diseases. One common cause not seen in dogs is infection with feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1). FHV-1 causes ulceration by direct infection of the epithelial cells. Lesions appear as round or dendritic (branching) ulcers.
Florida keratopathy, also known as Florida spots, is an eye condition characterized by the presence of multiple spots within both corneas. [1] It is most commonly seen in dogs and cats, but is also rarely seen in horses and birds. [2] The disease is found in the southeastern parts of the United States. [2]
Topical formulations may be used in burns or for infections of the outside of the eye. [6] It is often only used for two days until bacterial cultures determine what specific antibiotics the infection is sensitive to. [7] The dose required should be monitored by blood testing. [5] Gentamicin can cause inner ear problems and kidney problems. [5]
