The World Baseball Classic (WBC), also referred to as the Classic, [4] is an international baseball tournament sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), [a] the sport's global governing body, and organized in partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) and Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA).
The 2009 tournament is the only World Baseball Classic in which every team had appeared in at least one of the previous tournament. Prior to all 16 teams that participated in the 2006 tournament were invited to the tournament that year. The total number of teams that have participated in the World Baseball Classic until the 2023 edition is 23.
The rosters for each team in the 16-team tournament were announced Wednesday evening. The fourth World Baseball Classic kicks off on March 6 in cities around the world.
Japan won their record-extending third title after defeating defending champions United States 3–2 in the championship game, becoming the second team since the Dominican Republic in the 2013 World Baseball Classic to win the WBC with an undefeated record.
