The company was founded by Polish immigrant Maxwell Kohl, who opened a corner grocery store in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , in 1927.
Herbert Hiken Kohl (February 7, 1935 – December 27, 2023) was an American businessman, philanthropist, and Democratic politician from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.He served 24 years as a United States senator from Wisconsin, from 1989 to 2013, and earlier served as chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
From 1974 to 2016, Kohl taught at Wellesley College. He is the author of many books, 140 articles and reviews on the archaeology of the Ancient Near East and has conducted fieldwork in Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia. He was a member of the editorial board of the scholarly journal Antiguo Oriente.
