The Grand Falls Casino Resort is located along the South Dakota border, northwest of Larchwood. The casino opened for business June 9, 2011. The casino resort was developed by Kehl Management Company. Along with the casino there is a 97-room hotel. An 18-hole golf course is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014.
Iowa Highway 9 is the most northern of Iowa's east–west highways, traversing the entire northern tier of counties. It runs from the eastern terminus of South Dakota Highway 42 at the South Dakota border east of Sioux Falls, South Dakota near Benclare, to the Wisconsin border at Lansing where it continues as Wisconsin Highway 82.
Laurens was the home of Alvin Straight, a 73-year-old man famous for travelling 240 miles (390 km) on a lawnmower. His story was made into the film The Straight Story (1999), directed by David Lynch and starring Richard Farnsworth (who received an Oscar-nomination for his performance) and Sissy Spacek. It was filmed partly in Laurens.
