The book Malayalam Kathegalu (translation:Malayalam Stories), for which he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation, is the translation of stories by 25 Malayalam writers including Thakazhi, Basheer, M. T., T. Padmanabhan, Malayattoor Ramakrishnan, Punathil Kunjabdulla, U. K. Kumaran, Santhosh Aechikkanam, and Benyamin. [3]

The first chapter of the book deals with the procedure for getting kalidina, starting from the kalivarsa count, and the method for getting the mean positions for planets. The second chapter provides the method for deriving the true positions of all planets, perigees and the nodes.

Kailasam was born in a Tamil Iyer brahmin family in Mysore, Kingdom of Mysore (now Karnataka).He belonged to the Mangudi Brahacharanam subsect. His father, T Paramasiva Iyer, was a revenue collector in the Government of Mysore who later became the Chief Justice of Mysore High Court.
