The historical significance of the Florida Theatre and its architecture led to a $500,000 grant from the State of Florida and a $350,000 grant from the City of Jacksonville HUD Community Development Block Grant with an additional $150,000 from fundraising.

As of the 2020 census, the city's population is 55,698, up from 49,546 at the 2010 census. It is a principal city in the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The theater closed in 1983 after it had fallen into disrepair. In 1997, the St. Lucie Preservation Association Inc. bought the building. It later partially reopened in 1999 after a $750,000 grant was awarded to renovate and restore the structure to its former condition.
