One of Houston's oldest public parks, Hermann Park was created on acreage donated to the City of Houston by cattleman, oilman and philanthropist George H. Hermann (1843–1914). The land was formerly the site of his sawmill. [ 7 ]

The fast and flat course starts in the downtown area near Daikin Park and takes runners past scenic Houston areas and communities—including Houston Heights and Neartown, past Hermann Park and Rice University, over to Uptown, and then through Memorial Park and Allen Parkway, finishing at the George R. Brown Convention Center downtown.
Rice University and Memorial Hermann Hospital can be seen at the top left, and Hermann Park can be seen at the top right. Harris Gully, which has been rerouted into an underground culvert, runs from the left side of the photograph into Brays. By the first half of the 20th century, suburbs of Houston had reached the banks of Brays Bayou.
