The M18 begins in Pretoria, just north of the city centre, at a junction with the two one-way streets of the M22 route (Boom Street & Bloed Street). The City of Tshwane (Pretoria metropolitan area) like most South African metropolitan areas uses Metropolitan or "M" routes for important intra-city routes, a layer below National (N) roads and Regional (R) roads. Each city's M roads are independently numbered.
The M1 route begins at a junction with the M2 route (Nana Sita Street; Charlotte Maxeke Street) and the western terminus of the M6 route (Visagie Street). It heads northwards as Es'kia Mphahlele Drive (formerly DF Malan Drive [5]), separating Pretoria West in the west from Pretoria CBD in the east and meeting the R104 route (WF Nkomo Street) and the M22 route at the next junction.
After 4.7 kilometres, the M9 changes its street name to Florence Ribeiro Avenue (formerly Queen Wilhelmina Avenue [6]) and forms the boundary between the suburbs of Groenkloof to the west and Waterkloof to the east, continuing north-north-west.
It goes around Church Square before becoming WF Nkomo Street (formerly Church Street [5]) and intersecting with the R101 route. The old route through Pretoria Central, specifically from the M5 junction to the west, was then re-designated as the M4 Metropolitan Route of Tshwane, [9] although some Global Positioning Systems still label this old route as the N4 together with the newer route north of Pretoria. [6]
The M19 begins in Lyttelton Manor, at a junction with the M18 route (Botha Avenue). It begins by heading south-west as Cantonments Road, then as Rabie Street, meeting the M34 route (Jean Avenue) adjacent to the Jean Crossing Mall, to enter the Centurion CBD, where it crosses the Hennops River, bends to the south and becomes John Vorster Drive.
