Arthur Stilwell began construction on the first line of what would eventually become the Kansas City Southern Railway in 1887, in suburban Kansas City, Mo.Together with Edward L. Martin, Stilwell built the Kansas City Suburban Belt Railway, a 20-mile long railroad, which was incorporated in 1887 and began operation in 1890.
In 1996, Kansas City Southern (KCS) became a 49% owner of the railroad, as part of a larger business deal. KCS bought out TMM in 2005 and made Tex-Mex a wholly owned and consolidated subsidiary of its Kansas City Southern Railway. Canadian Pacific Railway purchased KCS in December 2021 for US$31 billion.
The tracks are part of the UP Beaumont Subdivision. Predominantly a single track railroad with limited sidings, it is normally restricted to northbound and eastbound traffic, averaging around 15 trains daily including Amtrak's eastbound Sunset Limited. Canadian Pacific Kansas City and BNSF has trackage rights at the Beaumont Sub.
