The United States Navy established Aviation Repair and Overhaul Unit No.1 (AROU 1) in the spring of 1944 on Momote Airfield between Seeadler Harbor and the Bismarck Sea on Los Negros Island. AROU 1 conducted maintenance and testing of naval aircraft and supplied aircraft to naval forces for major assaults as far away as the Philippine Islands.

Rambutyo Island is 88 km 2 (34 sq mi) and is located 50 km (31 mi) SE of Manus Island, part of the Hornos Island Group. It is roughly triangular in shape with a base 16 km (9.9 mi) in diameter East-West. The centre of the island has a volcanic peak about 230 m (750 ft) high. Offshore lie important reef complexes.
