An inflatable seal is a type of rubber seal that inflates and deflates based on the presence of an inflation source. This allows the seal to accommodate a variable sealing gap. When pressure is applied internally to the seal, it inflates to conform to uneven surfaces and provides a reliable barrier from moisture, damp and other contaminants.
An inflator stem is not used; instead, a removable cap on a valve stem embedded in the tire rim is fitted, with only the cap visible. When inflating the tire, the cap is first removed, typically with a coin, and then a "portable" dedicated inflator stem is screwed onto the valve stem. Through the inflator, the tire is inflated as usual.
Such seals are often critical for the operation of pneumatic controls, and if a crack penetrates the seal, all functions of the system can be lost. Nitrile rubber seals are commonly used in pneumatic systems because of its oil resistance. However, if ozone gas is present, cracking will occur in the seals unless preventative measures are taken.
