It can be reached from Barangay Caimpogan or from Barangay New Visayas in the municipality of San Francisco. The Samar Island Natural Park, in Samar, is the largest contiguous tract of old-growth forest in the Philippines. It is the country's largest terrestrial protected area , with an area of 333,300 hectares (824,000 acres).
The natural park was established on April 20, 2007, by Proclamation no. 1275 encompassing 3,800 hectares (9,400 acres) with a buffer zone of 1,937 hectares (4,790 acres). The park was created under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources .
