In 1979 at the age of 13, Rinzin began his apprenticeship as a student of traditional Tibetan thangka painting under the tutelage of Tibetan artists including Kalsang Lodro Oshoe, Khepa Gonpo, and Rigdzin Paljor. He received his certificate of mastery in 1983 at age 18, receiving the title of "Best Thangka Painter" of that year's cohort.
