North Carolina Shipbuilding Company was a shipyard in Wilmington, North Carolina, created as part of the U.S. Government's Emergency Shipbuilding Program in the early days of World War II. From 1941 through 1946, the company built 243 ships in all, beginning with the Liberty ship SS Zebulon B. Vance , and including 54 ships of the US Navy .
At its peak it had 300 Victory ships and Liberty ships, many of which had been built at the nearby former North Carolina Shipbuilding Company Shipyard. Some ships in the fleet were reactivated for the Korean War and Vietnam War. Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Wilmington closed in 1962, with the last ship removed in February 27, 1970.

New Hanover County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina.As of the 2020 census, the population was 225,702. [1] The county seat is Wilmington. [2] Though the second-smallest county in North Carolina by land area, [3] it is one of the most populous counties, as Wilmington is one of the largest communities in the state.
Cape Fear is a coastal plain and Tidewater region of North Carolina centered about the city of Wilmington. [2] The region takes its name from the adjacent Cape Fear headland, as does the Cape Fear River which flows through the region and empties into the Atlantic Ocean near the cape.
Built in 1951 and opened in 1955, the facility is situated on an Army-owned 8,500-acre (34 km 2) site on the banks of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick and New Hanover counties of North Carolina approximately 16 miles (26 km) south of Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Murchison Building (location: ) enjoys a commanding view of Battleship Park and the floating museum USS North Carolina (ship memorial location: ) located across the Cape Fear River. The ship is viewable in aerial photography of the area, e.g. Google Earth and can serve as a landmark when pinpointing the building from them.
