The parish was formed in 1828, [1] and was named for the first Louisiana governor, William C. C. Claiborne. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,170. [2] The parish seat is Homer. [3]

It was the home church of Frederick Douglass Lewis, the league's president. The NRHP nomination document notes that "plans affecting growth and change in Claiborne Parish were envisioned, created, and put forth during the sessions held at the church."
