The name akçe originally referred to a silver coin but later the meaning changed and it became a synonym for money. The mint in Novo Brdo, a fortified mining town in the Serbian Despotate rich with gold and silver mines, began to strike akçe in 1441 when it was captured by the Ottoman forces for the first time. Early Ottoman silver coins are the small akçes. With the accession of the Safavid dynasty , Persia emerged as an independent state, also in terms of language and identity. This coincided with a shift from the use of Arabic to Persian in the coins' inscriptions.
As the silver coins were debased, other denominations appeared: 30 para, 1 + 1 ⁄ 2, 3, 5 and 6 kuruş. The final coinage issued before the currency reform consisted of billon 1, 10 and 20 para, and silver 1 + 1 ⁄ 2, 3 and 6 kuruş. In 1844, the Turkish gold lira was introduced as the new standard denomination.
