Tamil cinema in Sri Lanka is not as developed as Sinhala cinema or its Indian counterpart, the Tamil cinema of Kodambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is especially due to the high production rates of the influential commercial Tamil films from Tamil Nadu , India and the long run ethnic civil war in Sri Lanka .

The earliest ever Tamil films were mostly destroyed or unrecovered during wartime. The first known Sinhalese film dubbed in Tamil was released on December 29, 1951. [1] [2] The Sri Lankan Tamil film Samuthayam (transl. Society), an adaptation of C.N. Annadurai’s Velaikkari, was made in 16 mm and technicolor. It was shown in 1962 and 1963.
The film's co-producer Kaushalya Wickramasinghe stated that the Tamil version of the film will be screened in 50 theaters across the island from 29 July 2022 and it will be shown as a distribution of the National Film Corporation. [9] The portions featuring Ajmal Ameer and Vidya Pradeep were shot in Tamil only and dubbed for the Sinhala version.

K. Balachander's romantic drama film Punnagai Mannan (1986) featured Revathi in the lead role as a Sinhala girl in love with a Tamil dancer. In one scene, she is kidnapped by Sri Lankan Tamils owing to the political tensions in Sri Lanka. At the time of release, the film became a talking point for showing a Sinhala person in a positive light. [2]
