Ridi Viharaya (Sinhala: රිදී විහාරය) or Silver Temple is a 2nd-century BCE Theravada Buddhist temple in the village of Ridigama, Sri Lanka. [2] [3] Built during the reign of Dutthagamani of Anuradhapura, the temple is considered as the place where the silver ore, which provided silver to complete Ruwanwelisaya; one of the largest stupa in Sri Lanka, was discovered.

Sandakada Pahana of the Ridi Vihara, built during the Anuradhapura period. Sandakada Pahana , also known as Moonstone , is a unique feature of the architecture of ancient Sri Lanka . [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It is an elaborately carved semi-circular stone slab, usually placed at the bottom of staircases and entrances.

The Makara Thorana is decorated with images of Brahmā, Śakra, Santuṣita, Saman, Santhusthika, Natha and Maitreya. [12] Inside the shrine room is a 2.43 m (8.0 ft) high statue of a seated Buddha, in the 'Dhyana Mudra’ pose, the posture of meditation associated with his first enlightenment, [ 11 ] with four standing Buddha statues flanking it.
The first visit was made to Mahiyangana in the ninth month after the Buddha attained enlightenment. [4] The Mahavamsa says that he conquered the yakshas there and sent them to an island named Giri, thereby setting the background for the establishment of Buddhism in the country later on, where the Buddha knew that the Dhamma would prevail "in all its glory". [5]
It is said that Amandagamini built a temple known as 'Ridi Viharaya' near the Kurunegala area and renovated many other temples. Amandagamini used to offer baskets of sweet fruits to the Sangha . Therefore, historical chronicles state that the word 'Āmanḍa' was also added to his original name, 'Gamini Abhaya' during his reign.
